Paleo / Primal In A Time of Debauchery
Once in a while I will indulge myself in some good ol’ food/drink. Mardi Gras 2010 was that “once in a while”. I ended up at a cool restaurant called Town Hall (Yelp it) in San Francisco. I hadn’t used a non- Paleo/Primal meal in a while so I figured why not cheat on Mardi Gras? For $50.00 plus tax any human being can join this 6 hour debacle that takes place annually at a cozy lodge like restaurant in downtown San Francisco. There was an all you can eat “raw bar” (my favorite stand) that included all you can eat, shucked in front of your face, oysters. An all you can eat debauchery wouldn’t be complete if it wasn’t all you can drink also. It was open bar all night for Beer, Wine, and some other sugar filled drinks that I can’t even pronounce. There was also the usual Mardi Gras fare of Jambalaya, Etoufee, Grits.
Being Paleo/Primal for so long, even when I cheat I can’t fully cheat. After living this lifestyle for so long I can’t swallow those carbs like I used to. I mainly stuck around the Fried Chicken (which is what they’re known for), BBQ Ribs, and Andouille Sausages. I tried to drink some beer but ended up switching to wine instead.
It feels good to do a “cheat meal” every once in a while (once a week). The pseudo hangover the next day wasn’t the most fun thing to wake up to on a Wednesday but it was well worth it. It is nice to be able to join festivities such as Mardi Gras then get right back to living the Paleo/Primal lifestyle. When I first started Paleo/Primal I felt like an outcast among my family friends because I could never join in on their events. Nowadays I feel I have found the perfect balance between living a healthy lifestyle and having a little fun now and again.
